Care programmes

The Neurorehabilitation Unit has developed a series of care programmes specifically aimed at fulfilling the needs of each individual patient with brain injury.

ASSESSMENT AND MEDICAL CONSULTATION PROGRAMME (BY APPOINTMENT)

Assessment and evaluation is documented by professionals depending on the patient’s clinical situation.

The first few consultations are free and can be arranged by sending an email to info@irenea.es or by phoning any of our centres.

PROGRAME FOR ALTERED LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

At the vithas Hospitals Neurorehabilitation Unit, we are specialists in assessing and treating patients with altered levels of consciousness (coma, vegetative state or unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, and minimally conscious state). In fact, our research team is conducting research into improving our understanding of the neural changes that occur between the coma state and the recovery of consciousness.

An accurate and reliable assessment of the level of arousal and the level of consciousness is crucial for the diagnosis, prognosis, and handling of patients with low levels of consciousness.

We have therefore developed a specific programme of therapy for patients with altered levels of consciousness. The programme includes a clinical and neurological assessment, as well as pharmaceutical treatment, multisensory and basal stimulation, physiotherapy and posture therapy, and stimulation of the orofacial musculature, among other treatments.

PROGRAMME FOR NEURO-ORTHOPAEDIC ALTERATIONS AND SKELETAL MUSCLE TREATMENT

Includes the application of specific techniques such as botulinum toxin, intrathecal baclofen therapy (ITB therapy), conventional physiotherapeutic training, robotic systems, etc., and the treatment of common complications such as heterotopic ossification, articular rigidities, myofascial pain syndrome, and neuropathic pain, among others.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL PROGRAMME

This programme includes the clinical and pharmacological management and supervision of the main cognitive difficulties (memory, attention, orientation, etc.) and problems of behaviour and personality (apathy, irritability, lack of inhibition,…).

Likewise, the Neurorehabilitation Unit has support groups aimed at improving awareness of patients’ illnesses and emotional disorders. This in turn helps to create awareness of disorders and the functional effects of the condition on patients’ daily lives. The aim of these programmes is to provide emotional support to help patients to adapt to their current situations and to plan appropriately for the future.

TRAINING AND CARE PROGRAMME FOR FAMILY MEMBERS

The work of family members and carers is essential throughout the rehabilitation process. Therefore, the service has developed a specific training and care programme for families.

This programme includes regular meetings between the patient’s family and neurorehabilitation professionals, information and advice on how to obtain social support, and individual and group training and therapy sessions for patients with brain injury and their family members. These sessions are organized by different areas comprising our multidisciplinary team.

One of the aims of the vithas Hospitals Neurorehabilitation Unit is to inform, train, and advise family members and carers. That is why we have developed two psychoeducational tools with hints and tips on how family members and carers should act when caring for patients with brain injury. These tools are tailored and adapted to the clinical situation of each patient at each phase of the rehabilitation process:

PROGRAMME OF ASSESSMENT AND ADVICE IN TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND ORTHOPAEDIC ASSISTANCE

This programme includes functional, personal, and environmental assessment as well as training in basic activities (getting dressed, visiting the bathroom, hygiene, etc.) and instrumental activities (handling transport, managing finances, etc.) of daily living. In addition, we perform biomechanical and postural analysis to tailor the design, build, and fit of all orthotic material.

PROGRAMME OF DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF DYSPHAGIA

This programme includes ear, nose, and throat and speech therapy assessment using fibroscopy, videofluoroscopy, and dietary and alimentary adjustments.

MEDICAL LEGAL EXPERTISE

This programme includes assistance in producing and submitting legal reports.
