At the Neurorehabilitation Unit, we believe in innovating and incorporating new technologies to supplement conventional treatments with proven clinical results. To do so, we have a research team working on developing and applying innovative treatments and new technologies in neurorehabilitation.

LOKOMAT© PRO V6 FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN

In neurorehabilitation, gait rehabilitation and training is one of the main goals for motor skills, and the vithas Hospitals Neurorehabilitation Unit has broad experience and professionals with specialist expertise in this field.

vithas Valencia al Mar Hospital has one of the most advanced gait training tools for adults and children: The Lokomat® pro V6.

The Lokomat® Pro V6 is the only robot in the Region of Valencia, and indeed in the whole of Spain, with these characteristics for gait rehabilitation. It boasts novel features such as feedback, additional functions for therapeutic programmes, and novel virtual reality systems to achieve greater gait training efficiency.

The Lokomat® pro V6 robot offers highly consistent and highly intensive gait training to help patients to repeat their gait with the greatest similarity to their normal gait.

The Lokomat® Pro V6 is used in the treatment of patients with different levels of complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries (paraplegia and tetraplegia). In addition, the Lokomat® Pro V6 is a useful tool for gait retraining in subjects with hemiparesis and paraparesis due to brain injury in both the adult (strokes or traumatic brain injury) and paediatric (cerebral palsy) populations.

Lokomat® pro V6 – Many small steps can lead to huge improvements

Lokomat® provides task-oriented training and allows intensive repetition, two of the main principles for neuroplasticity and motor learning. Moreover, this training is integrated in a virtual reality scenario that provides augmented performance feedback and enhances motivation and learning.

At the vithas Valencia al Mar Neurorehabilitation Unit, we are already using the latest Lokomat® Pro V6 robot in our overall rehabilitation programmes. The training protocol is set to match each patient’s circumstances following assessment by expert professionals. The system is currently being successfully tested for patients with impairments in their gaits.

The vithas Valencia al Mar Neurorehabilitation Unit provides robot-assisted walking therapy using the Lokomat® to help pediatric and adult patients improve their ability to walk.

DOMOTIC APARTMENT

The Neurorehabilitation Unit boasts a domotic apartment within the hospital environment, equipped with outstanding assistance and the latest adaptations so that patients can train themselves in the basic activities of daily living (transferring, managing personal hygiene, showering, self-feeding, getting dressed,…) and more complex activities such as cooking, performing domestic chores, using new technologies (telephone, computer,…), etc.

SWIMMING POOL

The Neurorehabilitation Unit has an adapted swimming pool where patients with brain injury can benefit from hydrotherapy and can train their motor activities depending on their physical impairments.

VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEM FOR MOTOR REHABILITATION (MOTOR BIOTRAK)

The program allows patients to safely train static and dynamic equilibrium by carrying out simple, practical, and highly innovative tasks.

Games and contents have been developed specifically to meet the needs of patients with neurological disorders, resulting in a system that is useful for patients and easy to use for clinicians.

The system immerses patients in a virtual 3D world where they must perform a series of movements to earn items that appear in the virtual world around them. The program includes exercising in sitting and standing positions, making it suitable for use with patients with varying degrees of motor difficulties.

VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEM FOR COGNITIVE REHABILITATION (COGNITIVE BIOTRAK)

Using a multi-touch screen, patients can work individually or in groups to overcome cognitive impairments due to brain injury such as attention disorders, memory loss, difficulties in organizing and planning, etc. The device offers a battery of exercises of varying degrees of difficulty to match each patient’s clinical situation.

VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEM TO IMPROVE PATIENTS’ ANOSOGNOSIA (‘ESCALADA DE LA CONCIENCIA’)

A key factor in the rehabilitation process is patients’ awareness of impairments (cognitive, physical, and behavioural) and the functional limitations derived from these impairments. This awareness, together with the ability to plan for the future realistically and appropriately according to these impairments, is crucial.

‘Escalada de la Conciencia’ is a virtual reality program that uses a multi-touch screen to improve patients’ awareness of illness and social skills in a clear, engaging environment.

VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEM TO IMPROVE PARETIC UPPER LIMB MOVEMENT (UMBRELLA)

Umbrella is a tool based on virtual scenarios specifically designed for the rehabilitation of paretic arms. With Umbrella, patients are able to train meaningful task-oriented upper limb movements in virtual scenarios. The system projects different scenarios that encourage the patient to repeat daily, functional movements (such as cooking, playing the piano, shopping, etc.), and provides augmented feedback on the results of these actions. Umbrella uses the Microsoft Kinect® system to detect the subject’s arm movements, and it guarantees the necessary interaction between the patient and the virtual environment

ROBOTIC SYSTEM FOR UPPER LIMBS (ARMEO®SPRING)

Armeo® Spring is a rehabilitation tool specifically designed for the recovery of the upper limb following neurological injury. It consists of an ergonomic exoskeleton that enhances active movement and enables functional use of residual upper limb voluntary activation. Exercises are integrated in virtual scenarios with a wide range of difficulty levels. Therapists can adjust the work area to the patient’s characteristics and can choose the most appropriate exercises to provide personalized rehabilitation programmes that match the patient’s needs in each recovery level.

COMPUTERIZED DYNAMIC POSTUROGRAPHY (NedSVE/IBV©) AND KINETIC GAIT ANALYSIS (NedAMH/IBV)

NedSVE/IBV© is a computerized posturography application that provides objective analysis of static and dynamic balance disorders. It provides easy-to-interpret graphical data for an accurate assessment and evaluation of our patients’ clinical situation and of the results of rehabilitation approaches. It provides visual feedback of the centre of pressure and can be used as a training tool. NedAMH/IBV uses a dynamometric platform to measure the different ground reaction forces and moments in the patient’s gait. Both tools compare individual data with a battery of parameters from a healthy population.
